Oil Shale at The South Cut
Published
A new mine opens south of the Crash Site. The South Cut digs Oil Shale for anyone with Mining 5, past a new stretch of road, with a Motherlode Slab for the very lucky and a new setting for what Mining does when your pack is full.

Two new places have appeared south of the Crash Site. The South Access Track is a muddy service road with nothing on it but a short walk. At the end of it, The South Cut is a mine cut straight into black, thinly layered oil shale. Each leg is the usual 24 seconds, so the mine is about 48 seconds from the ship and there is no way round the road. You need Mining 5 to dig there. See Mining & Refining for the numbers.
Oil Shale is heavy, 600g a piece and five to a tile, and each attempt takes a minute. A success gives two, three or four, equally likely, and 100 Mining experience. Your chance still starts at 35% at Mining 1 and only reaches certainty at Mining 50, so Mining 5 is 40.30%. An attempt that misses is no longer wasted: it still gives one Oil Shale and 20 Mining experience. A charged Loadsteel Cutter adds one more Oil Shale to either kind of attempt, so a charged low yield is two.

A success can turn up an Uncut Sapphire about one time in twenty, or, about one time in a hundred, a Motherlode Slab: a single unbroken 12kg specimen of layered shale with an amber seam through it. The Slab is the first Ultra Rare item. Its tile shimmers wherever you carry it, it adds 150 Mining experience, and finding one posts an ULTRA RARE FIND line in General for everyone to see. Sapphires from The South Cut are not announced.
There is a new setting in Mining, Prioritize primary resources, and it is Off. Off is the careful choice: Mining will not start an attempt unless there is room for the ore and for any one find. On, Mining keeps going while there is room for a single ore, keeps as much ore as fits, and gives up any find that has no room left, for good, even an Ultra Rare one. It is set per character, and it applies to every mine.
